Tony Elvington studied in Germany with goldsmiths that had continued the tradition of European art deco design. The European influence in his work can be seen in the softer lines than those that had evolved in American design in the first half of the 20th century.
Art Deco in Europe, as seen in the 20th century, draws from much earlier traditions that can date back over 1,000 years. In its highest form, it has clean powerful lines building on a base of geometry, which give deco its distinctive essence. Tony studied in Germany nearly thirty years ago with internationally renowned goldsmiths which formed the core influence in his designs.
One characteristic of his work is to generate contrast with the clean strong lines of his work and the textures he sets against them to increase the intensity of the design. This can be seen in his use of chibuichi, a copper & silver alloy prized for its color and texture. His pieces are also articulated to move with the person wearing the work, and providing an additional extension of the design. His work also uses natural elements such as paua shell and mother of pearl.
