The works of fiber artist and weaver Stina A. Soderstrom will be featured in August at the Hudson Valley Arts Center. Fiber art has been growing in recognition as a significant art form and a medium that is being rediscovered by those of the traditional fine arts world. Fiber art has traditionally held an important place in most cultures around the world and its sensual nature is gaining the interest of people in this culture who find themselves increasingly isolated and detached from the textures, colors of the non-electronic world.

Stina was born in Sweden and raised and trained in Finland. She studied in Varkus, Finland, learning traditional Scandinavian weaving techniques and structures. In addition, she has studied in Turku, Finland, at the internationally known Craft Teachers Institute.

From her formal training, Stina has grown her own techniques and structures; taking her fiber into three dimensions. Modifying her Dobby loom, she is able to take fibers and natural materials into new directions. Spanning both geometric forms and strong organic influences, Stina=s work is both diverse and unique .
