Using an old European technique of carving vessels rather than turning them, Kees generates dramatic and abstract vessels forms. Using the grain of the wood as his guide, Kees uses the flaws found in the material to add to the final character of the piece. In addition he is using reclaimed old growth woods salvaged from the bottom of the Great Lakes of North America. From the cold, oxygen poor waters are pulled woods that date back over 500 years, but lost in the lakes during the 1800’s. The tight grain of the slow growing trees and the unique history that surrounds them are played out in the unique forms that Kees creates.
