Fiber

skyblue mohair hat & shawl.JPG (66698 bytes)Inspired by seemingly limitless interaction of texture and color of natural fibers, Mcloughlin’s handfelted and handknitted apparel are experiments aimed at developing and mastering a personal fiber palette for needlefelted sculpture and extreme knitting installations.

Growing from abstract expressionist painting to handmade paper collage and sculpture, she became interested in fiber media when she discovered that fibrous paper pulps expressed color in whole new realms than painter’s pigment. Animal fiber proved even more diverse. Different breeds of sheep, llamas, goats, and other creatures bear fleece with distinctly different luster, crimp, staple and uniformity. Natural and chemical dyes, spinning, felting, weaving or knitting transform these different fibers with an infinite variety of effects.
